Senior Engineering Technician – G16 (Columbus, GA)

SALARY: $1,477.04 Biweekly

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Prepares detailed engineering plans and drawings under supervision; imports and interprets raw survey field data; analyzes data, prepares drawings of existing conditions;assists in the preparation of contract documents by calculating quantity estimates.  Conducts field investigations, collects, process and analyzes data for traffic and safety inquiries from the public, City officials and State agencies. Review subdivision & construction plans for minimum design criteria and for traffic control devices, signs and pavement markings. Reviews Street Light plans for new construction and conducts street lighting investigations in the field. Reviews subdivision plats for accuracy; identifies needed corrections; identifies needed corrections; signs plats for record. Assists engineers in conducting seminars; provides expertise to local engineering and contracting firms; provides homeowners with assistance and information. Prepares easement drawings, property plats drawings, and legal descriptions. Interprets construction drawings for surveyors and project inspectors. Prepares Resolutions, Ordinances and other documents for Council consideration. Provides information regarding ordinances and regulations to the public. Interpolates deeds and plats; inputs graphic and non-graphic land data in to the GIS system. Assists the public by telephone, mail and in person with information related to city maps, addresses, and other geographic data. Carries out a continuous effort to improve operations and work processes.  Works cooperatively and jointly to provide continuous improvement and customer-driven service. Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of civil engineering practices, roadway design and construction standards.  Knowledge of surveying standards.  Knowledge of subdivision design standards.  Knowledge of GIS technology and its applications.  Knowledge of the hardware and software used in GIS applications.  Knowledge of cartography practices.  Skill in the use of personal computers, AutoCAd/MicroStation and job related software programs.  Skill in problem solving and decision-making.  Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in operating standard office equipment including work related computer applications.  Skill in the supervision of personnel.  Skill in the analysis of GIS data and in the creation of GIS related reports.
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
Associate’s Degree in Drafting and Design, Surveying, Engineering Technology, Information Systems or Related Training. Bachelor’s Degree preferred with concentration in engineering; five years of progressively responsible experience, or any combination of education, training and experience which provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Must possess a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia or Alabama.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The work is typically performed in an office while sitting at a desk or table. The employee occasionally lifts light objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color.  The work is typically performed in an office with periodic field investigations.
