GIS Technician – Columbus Consolidated Government (Columbus)

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Develop, creates, maintains, and monitors: software tools, web maps, and applications. Automation of database systems related to GIS. Provides support for web mapping infrastructure. Assist GIS technician and other specified personnel. Produces and distributes digital reports; produces and distributes digital map products. Inputs geographic and non-geographic data into the GIS system. Operates GIS related equipment, and other items. Performs a variety of clerical, administrative, and data entry tasks; compiles information and prepares reports; tracks and processes documents; enters and retrieves data.
Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of GIS technology and its applications. Knowledge of the hardware and software used in GIS applications. Knowledge of cartography practices. Skill in problem-solving and decision making. Skill in operating standard office equipment including work related computer applications. Skill in the analysis of data and in the creation of related reports. Skill in oral and written communication.
Minimum Educational and Training Requirements

Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. College or Technical College Degree preferred. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship. Having had a similar position for two or more years preferred or possess any combination of experience and training which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the equivalent work.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Physical Requirements

The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping.  The employee occasionally lifts light objects and must distinguish between shades of color.
