GRASP Mission and Objectives
The mission of GRASP is to provide leadership and expertise in the application of the concepts, methods, and tools of geography and geospatial information science to public health research and practice. GRASP collaborates with partners across the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), and among the broader public health community
GIS Data Coordination Fellowship
During the GIS Data Management Fellowship, the fellow will collaborate with the multidisciplinary GRASP staff, manage and maintain data essential to the work of GRASP and partners across CDC/ATSDR, and have access to GRASP GIS training opportunities. The fellow will coordinate and track geospatial data processing activities, and promote the use of emerging or novel GIS data sets among GRASP staff. Additionally, the fellow will coordinate collection and maintenance of metadata for GRASP GIS, environmental, demographic and health data in Microsoft SQL Server/SDE databases and a geospatial data repository.
Required skills
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Information Technology, computer science, geography, GIS, or a related field
• Experience with management, analysis, development, administration, or infrastructure work around data management
• Knowledge of GIS technologies
• Ability to work with external vendors in coordinating data updates and delivery
• Principles and practices of data management and data collection
• Ability to take initiative, provide attention to detail, and deliver careful, high-quality work
• Excellent interpersonal skills, reliable, well-organized, self-directed, and able to work as a member of a diverse team
Desired skills
• Experience with adding, updating, and managing metadata
• Knowledge of U.S. Census, American Community Survey, environmental and health datasets a plus
• Knowledge of various data types and storage methods i.e. SQL Server, ArcSDE, File Geodatabases, etc
