Relationship between Abioseston & Land Use along the Chattahoochee River
Abstract:
The Chattahoochee River is a major water source, providing drinking water to over 3 million people. Additionally, Chattahoochee is a major source of recreation. Fishing, tubing, canoeing, boating, hiking and camping on its banks, shores, and in its watershed are all popular activities. (Randy Golden) The purpose of this project was to analyze the relationship between the land use within the watersheds of the Chattahoochee River tributaries and the affect it has on sediment runoff. This project encompasses the methodology for taking water samples and processing them to quantitatively measure the amounts of bioseston and abioseston from several tributaries of the Chattahoochee. Also, we will describe the methods used to find relationships between this data and land use data collected for each watershed. This project was made possible by support from the Institute for Environmental Spatial Analysis and the Biology Department at Gainesville State College.
