Don't miss the next Georgia URISA Low Cost Workshop, scheduled on Thursday, May 20th from 9:00 AM -5:00 PM. This event is hosted by Flint Energies, and will be held at the Flint Energies Service Center, located at 900 Highway 96 Warner Robins, GA, 31088.

Georgia URISA desires to offer, at a minimal cost, official URISA certified workshops. Costs are reduced by eliminating the exhibition hall, social activities, and ancillary activities; utilizing facilities at a minimal cost; and minimizing presenter costs.
*Please Note: The nature of this event is to control costs; therefore, expenses such as food and lodging are not planned. You will be on your own for lunch.

Topic: An Overview of Open Source GIS Software
Speakers: Sara Yurman and Randal Hale
Description:
Free and open source software (FOSS) has been offering choices to computer users for a number of years. Over the past few years the open source choices in GIS have been broader and more capable than ever before. This workshop will focus on GIS open source software. It will give an overview of current developments from technical and management perspectives. Selected packages and their applications in various projects will be demonstrated and discussed. Specific topics include:
- Open Source GIS background and development
- Overview of Open Source GIS spatial functionalities
- Live demonstration
- Interoperability: The Open Source GIS spectrum
- Planning and implementation issues
Speaker Bios:
Sara Yurman
Director of Information Services
Spatial Focus, Inc.
syurman@spatialfocus.com Yurman is a partner at Spatial Focus, a consulting firm specializing in geospatial data. She has years of experience in both organizational and technical aspects of geographic information, encompassing government at the local, regional, and state levels. Her activities have included team-building and change management as well as implementations of raster and vector GIS, GPS data integration, system development, and database design. She is a former GA URISA board member and president, an open source software advocate, the author of the Data Quality portion of the draft US address standard, the author of the URISA Overview of Open Source workshop and a co-author of the URISA Street Address Workshop.

Randal Hale is the President of North River Geographic Systems, Inc (NRGS). Randal spent 15 years in the GIS department at one of the southeast’s largest utility companies before leaving to start NRGS. Randal has a Bachelors degree in Geology from the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga. He serves as the Education and Outreach chair for Georgia URISA, as the 2nd VP of Mid-South ASPRS, and as the Web and Data chair on the TNGIC Board.
